Weisenburger, Steven. Modern Media - A family Story of Slavery and Child-Murder from the Old South New York Hill and Wang, Division of Farrar, Straus Giroux Hard Cover CR 1998, first edition, 1998, 3rd printing 1999, 352 pages with black and white illustrations, plates and maps. Dust jacket w/mylar cover and book all in very good condition. In January 1856, a 22-year old Kentucky slave, Margaret Garner, took her family and raced north toward Cincinnati and freedom. Her master followed her, but Margaret swore she would kill her children rather than let them return to slavery. She then decapitated her 2 year old daughter. The slave catchers burst in and stopped her before she could kill the other children. What followed was the longest, most spectacular fugitive slave trial in history. The author shows a portrait of the not-so-genteel Southern culture of slavery and how it destroyed all who lived in and with it. Price:
