Previous owner's name stamp front pastedowns, black and white photos with a roster of all existing structures in North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky; and of bridges that are no longer there in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas. Tells of John Montgomery's single span, 436 foot wooden suspension bridge, the longest ever built in the world. Horace King, the freed slave who built many bridges in Alabama and Georgia, and much more.

CR 1965, title date 1965, signed by Stowe, Jr. Ink inscription reads "Mr. Henry Rhyme - Best Wishes For The Yew Year - Robert L. Stowe, Jr. Jan 14, 1966". 288 pages with index and black and white photos. Blue covers. All good+ condition. He saw what the "company store" plan was doing to the people - turning in their cotton crop just to balance their account and were left with nothing. He knew they needed jobs that paid cash so he raised $75,000 and the mill was built and people realized that working and living in mill houses was much better and receiving real money for their work. The Stowes helped to build the industrial Belmont community.

Illinois Southern Illinois University Second Edition Hard Cover 
A novel of the North Carolina Brushy Mountains and the unique speech and folklore of the people who lived there. She moved from Boston to the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains and realized she had traveled many miles, but also decades - and found a very different people, strong and eager but also aloof. The opening incident is based on fact - the rest of the book is supposedly fiction. Although the people that lived in the Brushy Mountain area were very upset when the book was published. Part of the "Lost American Fiction" series edited by Matthew J. Bruccoli. CR 1936, this is second printing, July 1980. This is signed on the title page. An inscription on the front endpapers as follows: "For Doctor Roger Barker from Bob and Kathleen Morehouse - as a small measure of great appreciation for his skills, understanding and human (human) kindkess" signed and dated July 8, 1986. The front flap of the dust jacket has a pencil underlining of the word "incestuous" with "not really" written in the margin. Dust jacket has slight tears, grey covers, all good+ condition.

CR 1962, 244 pages with index and appendices, map of North Carolina Beaufort County on pastedowns, double page of plan of the town with names of people who lived there, also a 1717 map of Algonkian Tribes and Towns and other illustrations. The first two Centuries of Beaufort County, the lives of the people, where they settled and how they lived. It was one of the 7 oldest counties in North Carolina, straddling the Pamlico River from its source at the mount of the TAR, to the Pungo River, about 35 miles. Green covers, X-library with numbers, stamps, etc. Overall good+ condition.

Along with unpublished letters by and about Lederer to Governor John Winthrop, Jr. and an Essay on the Indians of Lederer's discoveries, edited with notes by William P. Cumming. Lederer was the first Eurpean to explore the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge Mountains and to leave a record of his discoveries, circa 1660-1670. 148 pages with index and bibliography. A fold-out map of the three routes he traveled through interior of Virginia thru the Blue Ridge Mountains. Map on inside of front cover. All very good. This is a reprint.
