The 27th Maine came mainly from York County, at the southernmost tip of Maine, a county of beaches, ledges and numerous islands where it fronts the breakers of the Atlantic Ocean. York County (also known as Wells), includes Kennebunk, Ogunquit and other summer resorts. There were no records of the 27th Maine from the Civil War and the Medal of Honor, so the author wrote to all the postmasters of each town, asking him to forward his letters to anyone who might have been ancestors of the men in the 27th. Letters began to pour in and he then discovered many people who still have the Medals in their possession and learned the stories behind the 27th Maine.
